Lisbon Writing | International Writing Retreats

We make spaces and spaces make us

  • Lisbon Writing | International Writing Retreats

Spaces define us and embrace us. In them, we read and write our stories.

The inspirational power of place is the guiding spirit of Lisbon Writing International Writing Retreats, held annually by Escrever Escrever since 2022.

Each retreat lasts approximately one week and it’s set in an evocative, comfortable location that offers an authentic experience of Portuguese life and culture.

Each year, we invite a creative writing tutor to lead the workshops. The retreats are open to participants of all nationalities and conducted in English, but anyone can write in their own language.

The programme includes accommodation, meals, daily workshops, individual mentoring — and free time for your writing.

Lisbon Writing was a really good step in me claiming that I am a writer. The workshops allowed me to put myself in a different lens than I normally do. The prompts and exercises, to think a little more creatively, a little bit more abstractly, more in a fiction sense - and what came out of me was surprising because I actually haven't really ever tried exploring of that space and so, even though I write more poetry or non-fiction, it actually weaved really beautifully into some of the projects I was already working on and if anything else just pushed my creative limits more than when I started.

I was feeling kind of stuck when I needed to write something and the prompts our tutor gave us really helped me with this. Like, they clicked something in my brain and I could write freely and that was pretty amazing.

Lisbon Writing for me is a great melting pot of people and a truly inspiring place to keep on writing and to keep learning. And I would say that it's really full of love and caring. I really appreciate that.

Lisbon Writing is cozy but professional; fun but productive. An all-round great experience. Don't think about it, just do it, just come! You will enjoy absolutely every minute of it. I certainly have.

Lisbon Writing for me has been an amazing experience. You get in there and you really work - we're given writing to do throughout the workshop, but then we're also given time in the afternoons to do our own projects and to expand on what we were learning. Try to make it happen, I am so glad that I did it!

The workshops were a really interesting place to explore a different version of my own voice. and questioned sort of the loops and the rhythms that we fall into, both on and off the page. It was a really interesting way to have other people played as devil's advocate for my piece and my pieces. And also, to have that really soft critique. So, both balancing the creative and the critical and having those two polarities. Or those two dualities, being able to dance together was really special. Lisbon Writing is an extended family - I've created connections that I'm going to be able to foster for the rest of my life.
